Last week I wrote about an enhancement to Google's Scholar Metrics that created a citation ranking of law reviews in Google Scholar. [UPDATE: Many more law reviews ranked here.] This led to another question: what would a citation ranking of individual law review articles look like according to the citation data in Google Scholar?
The functionality is only available for articles published in 2007-2011 (the same content on which Google's law review ranking is based) and for articles published in Google's top 20 law reviews. Using the data underlying Google's ranking of law reviews (see, for example here for the Harvard Law Review), I compiled a table of the 150 most-cited law review articles from Google's top 20 law reviews. The table ranks law review articles published between 2007 and 2011 by raw citation count, which is different from the method Google uses to rank law reviews but similar to existing article rankings by Shapiro and Pearse.
The results have much in common with the rankings from Shapiro and Pearse but also have some differences. One notable deficiency of the Google article rankings is the omission of all articles published in journals other than the most-cited 20 law reviews. This causes many highly-cited articles to be left out of the following table. The Google citation counts have other differences as described by Shapiro and Pearse in Part IV-B-1 of their essay, some of which are strengths and some of which are weaknesses.
The table of citation counts is listed below for the 150 most-cited law review articles in 2007-2011. I have not corrected Google's author names, capitalization, and other computer-generated quirks.
